Research Problem(s) Studied
Some students may appreciate an off-campus clinic better due to being able to drive, this will decrease the number of students we are able to reach if people patronize other clinics.
I collected data through the method of surveying. I thought this would appeal to the demographic of my audience and make it simple enough for me to analyze. I used Google Forms, and it did really help me in analyzing the responses given. It had it organized already and put percentages on it already which helped me immensely.

Research Instrument

I used Google Forms and asked these questions:
-
Name
-
What year of school are you in?
-
Have you ever used the mental health wellness resources offered by CAPS?
-
If you answered yes to the last question, how many times have you used their resources? Have you ever used the resources from Campus Health?
-
If you answered yes to the last question, how many times have you used their resources?
-
Have you ever used the resources offered by the health and wellness programs?
-
If you answered yes to the last question, how many times have you used their resources?
-
Do you live on campus, or do you commute?
-
Being a student, what health resources would be helpful to you?
-
While in school, have you ever been to a clinic outside of IU campus?
-
If you answered yes, why did you choose to go to a clinic off-campus?
Part Two
I surveyed eight individuals who share a common identification as college students. 62.5% of my participants were seniors, and 37.5% were sophomores. About 87.5% of my participants saw the need of having a wellness clinic and even provided insight on what they would like to see being provided in the clinic.

Through this survey, I learned a lot. I noticed how uncommon it is for students to use the resources that have already been provided by the school for mental health and well-being. For instance, 75% of people have never used resources offered by CAPS. And the 25% of people who did have only used it once. I wish I would’ve dug deeper to ask if it’s because of lack of time or comfortability. I also noticed that people like the idea of there being help available but don’t really want to take it. One person said they felt like “free therapy would be helpful”. This is something CAPS offers; their first session is free. I think this might have to do with stereotypes and the inability to be honest with oneself and take a step if needed. When asking people if they have been to CAPS before, I probably should have worded it differently. I say this because CAPS can have a stigma attached to it. I noticed people are more so willing to go to the health and wellness center, but the CAPS program isn’t used as much. 37.5% of people have used resources provided by the health and wellness centers, with 66.7% using it more than once. To be fair, this could also just mean that out of my eight people, a good percentage of people didn't feel the need for CAPS. This makes me wonder what the statistics are for the school and if the program is being used.
I plan on repurposing my idea. After seeing the results, I want to incorporate a ton of outreach events. This will break the stigma around getting help and it will eliminate the courage someone needs to take the step to getting help. I plan on incorporating events where we bring wellness to students on campus. These events will be hosted at common spots, like the campus center or the library to help relieve the pressure. We will host stress-reducing events where we share techniques, tips, and tricks to staying calm and remaining positive. We can host seminars where we teach people about hygiene and safe health practices. I see that a lot of people aren’t just focused on their mental health, but also on their physical health, so we can also host classes on preventative measures to take when it comes to some of the rampant diseases in this generation. This survey is opening my eyes to what people would like to see as resources for the things they are going through in college.
